My papaya-eating dogs

Published by Francesca Kang at 9:53 pm under Animals

Our two chihuahuas can smell a papaya miles away. When ever I buy a papaya and begin cutting it into pieces to be served they will be jumping up and down in excitement. It seems that they are more excited over eating papayas than their daily biscuits.

Once the papayas are cut into small pieces and served in their plates, they would just gobble them down in a twinkle of an eye.  That’s how I would best describe Roxy’s speed in devouring the papaya, but Wawa, who is more lady-like, eats a little slower, maybe in 3 twinkles of an eye. These two ‘boys’ (a term I’m now used to calling them) would then finish the papayas and look up at me with their tongues sticking out and with eyes begging for more. Sometimes out of pity for them and if they behave I would give them a second helping.

I discovered that the papaya helps relieve the dogs’ constipation. I remembered at one time Roxy was a bit constipated and having hard stools. Once fed with papaya, his stools became soft.

From then on we experimented giving them other fruits like bananas. But this is not their cup of tea. They still love papaya best.
