Internet addiction?

Published by Francesca Kang at 7:59 pm under Entertainment,Society,Technology

Exactly a year ago – before I got on to the internet and got myself a Facebook account – I used to bemoan the inordinate amount of time my husband Phillip spent on the internet. I couldn’t understand how he could spend a few hours staring on the computer screen some evenings so much so that I complained that he gave more attention to the computer than me and had become an internet addict.

He used the laptop in our sitting room where we spent our evenings in between watching television or reading. But we didn’t spend much time on the telly; just the news, some cooking shows and sometimes some documentaries on National Geographic or the History Channel.

Well, since Phillip taught me how to use the computer, I soon got on to Facebook and started my own blog.

I have to admit that the ‘accused’ became the ‘victim’. I’m now spending more time on the internet than Phillip. Not only do I go online to chat and blog but nowadays I surf the web for all kinds of information, and recently even took online lessons to play a musical instrument. How ironic is that? I now have to pause and think if I have become an internet addict myself.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me what an internet addict is? How many hours a day online qualifies one to such a status? Enlighten me, please.
