Funny People

A few nights ago my husband Phillip and I sat down to enjoy a DVD that we bought recently. The title of the DVD is Funny People, a movie starring Adam Sandler and others. It is supposed to be a comedy-drama (whatever that means), so (we thought) it should make us laugh.

After a hard day’s work we always enjoy watching funny movies to have a good laugh. A good dose of laughter is always good for the body and soul. We always feel good after the good laugh. I would also add that ‘A laughter a day keeps the doctor away’. I know it’s a well-worn overused clique, but it’s true – at least for me.

The story plot is about this guy George Simmons, who was a successful comedian and actor. When he learned of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship cause him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act.

Sad to say, a few minutes into watching the movie, we couldn’t believe our ears! The dialogue was punctuated frequently with all the foul and four letter words. Worse still, there were direct references to the male and female sexual organs. The storyline wasn’t not too bad but we felt that it was seriously compromised by its use of such profanities.

Honestly speaking, I’ve never in my life watched a movie like this one. Once or twice we were in the verge to turning off the DVD player but because we wanted to see the ending of the movie, we tolerated the words.

The movie actually has a good ending. There are some funny parts, which made us chuckle, but on the the whole it wasn’t an enjoyable experience because of the rather crude and objectionable content.

This episode make me wonder: why does anyone bother to make a movie with a nice storyline only to have it spoilt by profane language. May be someone out there could enlighten me.

Funny People is not funny after all.
